Twitter Users, Stats, Data & Trends

Important note: significant anomalies in the data published in Twitter’s own, official ad planning tools mean that this quarter’s data may be less representative of actual Twitter use than the data published in previous quarters. While all of the stats featured on this page rely on data published by Twitter itself, the significant reduction in Twitter’s headcount over recent months may have resulted in a decline in the accuracy of the data published in the company’s own tools. For a full exploration of these issues, please refer to this article.

Essential Twitter statistics and trends for 2023

Advertisers could reach 372.9 million users on Twitter in April 2023,(a) placing it 15th in our ranking of the world’s most ‘active’ social media platforms.(b)

However, data published in the company’s self-service advertising tools shows that Twitter’s potential advertising reach has fallen very quickly over the past three months.(a)

Twitter’s own data suggests that the total number of users that marketers can reach with ads on the platform decreased by roughly 183 million (-32.9%) in the three months leading up to April 2023.(a)

These latest figures indicate that roughly 4.6% of all the people on Earth use Twitter today.(c)

However, because the company limits use of its platform to people aged 13 and above, Twitter’s ‘eligible’ use rate will likely be higher than these figures suggest.(b)

How many Twitter users are there in 2023?

Twitter is one of the world’s top social platforms, but just how many people use Twitter today?

Data published in the company’s self-service advertising tools indicate that marketers could reach 372.9 million users on Twitter in early April 2023.(a)

These advertising audience figures suggest that 5.9% of all people aged 13 and above around the world use Twitter today.(c)

However, if we remove the people in this age group who live in China – where Twitter is still blocked – the platform’s eligible adoption rate increases to 7.4%.(c)

How fast is Twitter growing in 2023?

Twitter’s advertising audience reach

Recent data published in the company’s self-service advertising tools shows that Twitter’s advertising audience reach shrank by -19.8% over the past 12 months.(a)

To put this figure in perspective, advertisers can now reach 92 million fewer users on Twitter than they could this time last year.(a)

Note that Twitter’s advertising audience figures represent monthly users, rather than the daily user figures that the company used to report in its investor earnings reports.

The platform’s latest numbers indicate that Twitter’s advertising reach has grown much more slowly than Facebook’s advertising reach has grown over the past 12 months.(b)

For comparison, Facebook’s data show that the global advertising reach of its flagship platform increased by 5.0% (+108 million users) in the 12 months leading up to April 2023.(e)

However, it’s important to note that the numbers published in Twitter’s self-service advertising tools tend to fluctuate significantly over time, even within short periods. As a result, readers should be wary of any short-term trends within these numbers.

Note: The figures shown above are based on each platform’s advertising audience only, and may not be representative of respective active user bases.
