Most internet users go online using mobile devices, but roughly one in five of the world’s 5 billion mobile phone users still doesn’t have access to the internet.

Number of internet users
There are 4.333 billion internet users in the world today.
The total number of internet users around the world grew by 320 million in the past 12 months – roughly 900,000 new users every day.
Internet users are currently growing at an annual rate of more than 8 percent, but year-on-year growth is encouragingly much higher in many developing economies.
The average global internet user spends more than 6½ hours online each day. Added together, the world’s internet users will spend more than 1.2 billion years of human time online in 2019 alone.
Number of social media users
There are 3.534 billion social media users in the world today.
The total number of social media users around the world grew by more than 250 million in the past 12 months.
Social media users are currently growing at a rate of almost 8 percent per year, with the average social media user having an account on 9 different social platforms.
The average global user spends 2 hours and 16 minutes on social media each day. Time spent varies considerably by culture though, with Filipinos spending an average of more than 4 hours on social media every day, while people in Japan use social platforms for an average of just 36 minutes each day.
Number of mobile phone users
There are 5.117 billion unique mobile phone users in the world today, according to the latest data from GSMA Intelligence.
The total number of unique mobile users around the world grew by 124 million in the past 12 months.
Unique mobile users are currently growing at a rate of 2.5 percent per year. However, hundreds of millions of people have upgraded from ‘feature’ phones to smartphones in the past 12 months.
The latest data from Ericsson show that the number of mobile subscriptions associated with smartphones now exceeds 5.5 billion, accounting for almost 70 percent of the mobile handsets in use around the world today.
Smartphone use is currently growing at an annual rate of 9 percent, with well over 1 million new smartphones coming into use every day.
Number of e-commerce users
The latest data from GlobalWebIndex shows that more than three-quarters of the world’s internet users buy something online each month, with more people now making purchases on mobile devices than on desktop and laptop computers.
2.82 billion people around the world bought consumer goods like fashion, groceries, or electrical appliances online in the past year, according to the latest data from Statista, representing growth of 3 percent versus 2017.
The amount of money we spend on online consumer goods purchases now exceeds US$1.75 trillion per year, up 14 percent versus the previous 12 months.
