Digital 2026: Pitcairn

The Pitcairn Islands has the lowest population count of any officially recognised state in the world, with the Pacific island’s most recent census in 2021 identifying just 49 permanent residents and 5 expatriates.

Reports indicate that the majority – perhaps even all – of Pitcairn’s residents use the internet at least some of the time, and social media also appears to be popular amongst Pitkerners.

However, the small size of the nation’s population means that any data relating to digital adoption and activity could potentially identify specific individuals.

As a result, we’ve elected not to publish any details of internet or social media activity in the country for our Digital 2026 series, in order to protect residents’ privacy.
